The recent earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, New Zealand and Japan have heightened concerns in residents of California, the quake zone of the USA. Any connection between seismic events around the vast Pacific Ocean has been loudly dismissed by geologists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and in California. These geologists have their own theories on the next big earthquake in California.

Hayward Fault Frequency

Predictions of future seismic events are made on the basis of the regularity of past events, so the California geologists are looking at events around San Francisco and how frequently a major earthquake has occurred there. By digging trenches to see how the layers in the earth have moved, scientists have worked out that the Hayward Fault gives a big jolt every 140 years. Or so. No-one can give an accurate prediction because earthquake events depend on forces deep within the earth and we cannot, even with all our satellite technology and buried sensors, see underground. The Hayward Fault runs deep, about 10 miles deep, and is 50 miles long
